Snapshot:
The famed Jaguar style is featured in this entry-level, compact 4-door. The 2004 Jaguar X-Type is, however, built on a European Ford Mondeo platform, with the addition of all-wheel-drive. V-6 engines provide ample power. Price of 3.0 version cut by $5000, station wagon added.
How Much?:
US Prices for a 2004 Jaguar X-Type sedan go from $29,330 for the 2.5 liter V-6 to $33,330 for the 3.0 liter V-6.
The Inside Story:
The 2004 Jaguar X-Type features a handsome leather interior with handcrafted wood. The cabin is a bit tight, especially in the rear and the high cowl reduces sightlines. A glance at the instrument panel indicates that this is a sports machine, though the number of buttons and switches makes for a busy environment. Road noise is definitely audible but the engine sings a lovely song. The 2.5 is well-equipped, the 3.0 adds goodies such as 8-way power driver's seat, power moonroof.
Under the Hood:
Base engine is a DOHC 2.5 liter V-6 producing 192 hp, better than some class competitors. The optional engine is a 3.0 DOHC V-6 that belts out a hefty 227 hp, with 206 lb.-ft. of torque.
Transmissions:
Buyers of the 2004 Jaguar X-Type can select a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic with J-Gate at no extra cost.
Warranty:
4 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 4years/50,000 miles powertrain.
Should You Buy A 2004 Jaguar X-Type?:
We are unabashed Jaguar fans and have purchased a vintage Jag XJ-6 to prove it. Maybe that's why we're among the doubters when so much of the 2004 Jaguar's underpinnings come from the European Ford Mondeo, although the Mondeo is an excellent car. On the other hand, the standard all-wheel-drive gives the 2004 Jaguar X-Type an edge in performance and safety. And buying a new Jag is once again affordable. The truly exciting news is the addition of a very handsome station wagon; this is the Jaguar X-Type we'd buy.
