Snapshot: A handsome, front-wheel-drive 4-door that performs well with the base 4-cylinder engine, though a powerful V-6 is available. The 2004 Nissan Altima is one of the few sedans in its class that can be had with a manual transmission. Spacious interior and trunk. Sporty handling.
How Much?: Price for a 2004 Nissan Altima in the US ranges from $16,850 for the base model to $22,750 for a loaded V-6.
The Inside Story: A far cry from the first Altima, the 2004 Nissan Altima is now rather large for our tastes, though one obvious benefit is a spacious interior with ample rear seat room. Like several of today's sedans, the Altima is fairly tall, which makes for easier entry and a more commanding driving position. The interior looks impressive but some of the materials appear to be a bit flimsy. Side air bags are optional, sunroof comes standard in top-end models.
Under the Hood: With 170 hp and 180 lb.-ft. of torque, the 2004 Nissan Altima's 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder engine is strong and economical. Or you can opt for Nissan's award-winning 3.5 liter V-6 and indulge yourself in 245 rampant horses.
Transmissions: Choose between a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic in all 2004 Nissan Altima models except the 2.5 SL, which gets the automatic as standard.
Warranty: 3 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 5 years/60,000 miles powertrain.
Should You Buy a 2004 Nissan Altima?: Stylish, roomy and quick, the 2004 Nissan Altima has a lot going for it. It's a sporty sedan that's enjoyable on twisting roads, so if you like have your cake and drive it too, this is one family car that doesn't require major compromises. Performance with the 4-cylinder engine is so good we wonder why anyone would need the V-6, except for trailer hauling or carrying six big adults and heavy luggage up long grades. Some interior refinements are not up to the standards of other Japanese cars, which may be why Nissan can offer so much car for the money.
