FIVE HUNDRED: The SE model is gone, leaving only SEL and Limited. Front-seat-mounted side airbags and two-row side curtain airbags are now standard. Front-wheel-drive models now come exclusively with a 6-speed automatic, while all-wheel-drive versions continue with the continuously-variable transmission (CVT). A navigation system is now optional on the SEL and SIRIUS satellite radio is available on both models. A revised version of the Five Hundred is expected in 2008.
FOCUS: No major changes. An upgraded Focus is expected to bow in mid-2007 as a 2008 model.
FUSION: Front-seat-mounted side airbags and side-curtain airbags are standard in all models, and all-wheel-drive is available on V6-powered SE and SEL versions. SE and SEL models also get additional standard equipment, and a navigation system and SIRIUS satellite radio are welcome additions to the options list.
GT: Discontinued.
MUSTANG: A GPS-linked navigation system and SIRUS satellite radio join the options list, as does a new appearance package, the GT California Special. Ford will also offer three new Shelby performance packages.
SHELBY GT: (photo) This specially modified Mustang gets Ford Racing power and handling kits, including a Hurst short-throw shifter for manual-transmission models, along with special markings and a dash plaque to certify the car. All work is carried out at Carroll Shelby's shop in Las Vegas.
SHELBY GT-H: (photo) Similar to the Shelby GT, but available for rent as part of the Hertz Fun Collection. The GT-H is distinguished by gold stripes and special Hertz badging. All GT-Hs will have automatic transmissions and the traction control deactivation switch will be disabled.
SHELBY GT500: The top-performing Mustang, developed in cooperation between Carroll Shelby and the Ford Special Vehicles Team, features a 500 horsepower supercharged V8, six-speed manual transmission, race-tuned suspension and four-piston Brembo brake calipers. The GT500 will be available as both a coupe (photo) and convertible (photo).
TAURUS: Discontinued. Let's not forget that the original 1986 Taurus was a revolutionary car that set new standards for the American auto industry. So long, Taurus, and thanks for all you've done.
